Recently I was having one of those days when I knew I just wasn’t going to “bring my ‘A’ game”. It was just one of those off days where I hadn’t slept well and wasn’t feeling like myself. No matter what I did, I couldn’t get myself to function optimally. My mind wasn’t sharp, I was lethargic and my mind and body were slightly failing me that day.
We all have off days throughout the year. Sometimes they’re sporadic, other times they creep in consistently for numerous reasons: we’re tired, not feeling well, have a headache, are dealing with symptoms of a health condition, our day isn’t going well, our schedule is too busy, the day didn’t run smoothly, we’re running late, someone or something out of our control affected our day or actions, our mind feels foggy, we’re “out of it”, etc. The list goes on and on. Sometimes we can’t pinpoint the reason; for reasons unbeknownst to us, despite the fact nothing has changed from the day before, we’re just having an off day.
The Lord really spoke to me of His character in a wonderful way when I was having “one of those days” where my mind and body just weren’t going to function at their greatest potential. It was wonderful to think of His characteristics versus mine. He has never had an off day, or functioned short of perfection in any way, shape or form:
- God has never made a mistake
- He has never had to regret anything, because everything He does is right and perfect
- He knows everything
- There is nothing that confuses Him
- He knows the future
- He has no uncertainty about anything whatsoever
- He has never experienced unrighteous anger
- He doesn’t live in the past, focusing on what He could have done differently
- He doesn’t know what it’s like to worry
- He is always forgiving. He has never wrestled with trying to forgive someone
- He doesn’t know what it’s like to let hate, unforgiveness, worry, etc., eat you up inside
- He has never let anyone down
- He doesn’t have off days
- He has never committed a sexual sin
- He has never been consumed by lust
- He has never been trapped in the bondage of sin
- He cannot lie. He has never lied, and never will
- He is incapable of being unkind
- He is the only One who can show true, unconditional love
- He functions perfectly, optimally, every day. No health issues, foggy mind, etc.
- He is never tired or lethargic. There is no such thing as exhaustion clouding His actions or decision-making
- He is intelligent beyond measure
The list goes on and on when describing how incredible and wonderful He is. And especially in comparison with myself and my unlimited flaws, mistakes and sins, it is truly mind boggling and awe inspiring to meditate on His goodness and perfection. I am so blessed that He could love someone like me! To think that I can rely on the God of this universe, His power, strength, love and perfection every day makes me feel both humbled and exhilarated beyond words. I can rely on Someone to guide me who doesn’t have any flaws or weaknesses. He will never bring shortcomings to the table like I do. He doesn’t have an off day. When I’m weak He is strong. When I am tired He is alert. When I don’t feel well, He is still perfect, upholding the entire universe by His power. The more I think of Him and learn of Him, the more I want to continue getting to know Him. There are no words for how incredible He is. There is nothing I could ever face that He can’t carry me through.
I hope that in meditating on Him and the list describing His flawless character, you feel the same deep, utter joy and exhilaration that I am feeling as I type this. Remember how much God loves you, and that our precious Savior has redeemed you. Lean on Him. Rely on Him. Let His goodness and perfection get you through everything, every single day.
